Buying a gift for a guy can be one of the hardest things a person can do. It took a very smart person to find a cure for polio, and that was just luck! Asking them a number of questions about their interests can provide valuable information to assist your gift buying! Don't do it too close to their birthday though or it will seem suspicious. If you're going to go to the trouble of making a survey you might want to send it to multiple friends, and then have a kind of "interest database" saved on your computer. Then when it's time for a friends birthday, look up their file, and get an idea of what they are passionate about and find a gift they will really appreciate.

For a close friend it can be easy buying a gift. You know the person very well and buying something that reflects your common interests will usually make for a good gift. So buying something that you like yourself can be a safe bet. On the flip side, if you're buying a present for a friend who you're not that close to, then something general and safe can be better. A bottle of alcohol or a voucher for a massage or dvd can be a good choice.

If you're really not sure what kind of present to get, you may want to buy a gift hamper. Choosing gift baskets can make present purchasing easy as it gives the recepient a selection of goodies. There isn't an age limit on gift baskets as both young and old people can appreciate such a present, which can be custom-made depending on the person.

For a relative, something useful is usually the best way to go. If they don't need anything, or if you're still on the young side, making a gift can be seen as very thoughtful, and even if it's something they won't necessarily use, the fact that you made it yourself will make it very special to them and put a smile on their face.
